A scion of the Royal Dogra dynasty of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Karan Singh is perhaps the only such political leader in India who has spent more than seven decades in public life. Appointed as Prince Regent in absence of his father, Maharaja Hari Singh, in 1949, Karan was elected by the Assembly as first Sadr-e-Reyasat (President of autonomous state) of Jammu and Kashmir in 1952. Upon change of nomenclature he was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir between 1965 and 1967. A Member of Parliament for several terms, Karan Singh remained a Union Minister on a number of occasions.
